A thread's pitch diameter hides between the crests, where no standard bore gauge can reach. Deep Bores

Honed cylinders, barrels and metre-deep housings are beyond any handheld gauge. Extensions carry the head to the measurement point, transducer near the anvils to cancel temperature error — proven past 4 m (13 ft), 50–300 mm (1.97"–11.81"). A taper has a different diameter at every depth, so where you measure matters as much as what. Our heads gauge diameter at a defined datum, with a clamp-ring method to verify the angle itself.
